The College of Education for Humanities at the University of Karbala discussed master's thesis on the feasibility of implementing sustainable development goals in Iraq using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)by the postgraduate student, Mr. Mohammed Hassan Hassan.

The thesis aimed at analyzing the feasibility of implementing sustainable development goals in Iraq using GIS via evaluating the progress made in achieving the indicators of these environmental goals during the period 2015–2024, and by projecting the possibility of achieving them by 2030, the target year for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.

The thesis employed GIS and remote sensing technologies as advanced spatial tools for collecting, analyzing, and representing environmental data in both space and time, thus contributing to supporting planning and decision-making processes.

The thesis revealed that Iraq faces increasing environmental and climatic challenges that directly impact its ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as these challenges include dwindling water resources, rapid urbanization, continuous population growth, rising pollution levels, land degradation, declining rainfall, reduced vegetation cover, and rising temperatures.
