During a participation in the International Conference on the International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development (IDSSD 2026), held entitled "Science in Action: Shaping a Sustainable and Equitable Future for All hosted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at its headquarters in Paris, France Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research for Scientific Research Affairs, Prof. Dr. Haider Abd Dhahd outlined Iraq's strategic vision for developing its higher education and scientific research system and transitioning towards an integrated educational environment based on innovation, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence applications. 

The Deputy emphasized linking research outputs to national development priorities, in line with the objectives of the International Decade of Science and the Sustainable Development Agenda.

Prof. Dr. Haider Abd Dhahd highlighted the critical importance of deepening international partnerships in the sectors of water security, climate change, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence. 

The Deputy also emphasized the need to translate knowledge and scientific research into actionable policies and initiatives with tangible developmental impact, capable of addressing global challenges and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Prof. Dr. Haider Abd Dhahd  reviewed that the first day of the conference included sessions addressing the future of global science policies, the role of science in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and the launch of the National Focal Points Network for the International Decade of Science discussions also focus on mechanisms for translating scientific knowledge into practical policies and procedures that contribute to address global challenges.

For their part, Iraq's participation in the international conference underscores the Ministry of Higher Education's commitment to strengthening its presence in global scientific initiatives and expanding the horizons of international cooperation to support the development of the higher education and scientific research system, as well as presenting an opportunity to exchange expertise and build new partnerships with universities and research institutions, and to enhance the country's position as an active partner in international efforts to utilize science and innovation in the service of sustainable development and policymaking.

It is significant to mention that the conference is one of the most prominent international scientific events aimed at reviewing progress in implementing the International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development (2024-2033), as well as bringing together Ministers and officials from the education and scientific research sectors, policymakers, university presidents, scientists, and representatives of international organizations, research institutions, the private sector, and civil society organizations from around the world.
