College of Pharmacy, Mustansiriyah University discussed a Ph.D. thesis on the potential role of sodium-glucose cotransporter inhibitors dapagliflozin and empagliflozin as add-on therapy in a sample of Iraqi patients with diabetes by postgraduate student, Mrs. Hadeel Dilman Najm.

The thesis aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of two drugs from the group of sodium and glucose transporter inhibitors dapagliflozin versus empagliflozin as an additional treatment for diabetic patients with nephropathy, by studying their impact on the patients’ quality of life, in addition to recording blood sugar control and kidney function markers of inflammatory stress.

The thesis concluded that adding dapagliflozin or empagliflozin to the traditional anti-diabetic drug for nephropathy has a good effect on reducing albuminuria and improving the quality of life after 16 weeks of treatment, as it was found that both drugs achieved good control of blood sugar and metabolism.
