The College of Education for Pure Sciences, Thi-Qar University discussed a Ph.D. thesis on the role of genetic polymorphisms in the DLG5, GSTT1, GSTM1, and CD24 genes and susceptibility to IBD by the postgraduate student, Ms. Iman Ghali Hussein.
The thesis aimed at identifying mutations and genetic polymorphisms in the GSTT1, GSTM1, DLG5, and CD24 genes in patients, as well as studying the effect of deletions and insertions of nitrogenous bases in these genes and analyze their implications for the disease's pathogenesis.
The thesis highlighted that the interaction between genetic and environmental factors, particularly smoking and family history, in both patients and healthy individuals.
The thesis reviewed that the rs3805401 genetic variant in the CD24 gene is strongly and significantly associated with IBD, reinforcing its importance as a potential genetic marker.
The thesis highlighted that the rs1248696 variant in the DLG5 gene also showed an increase in the frequency of the CC genotype in Crohn's disease patients with the absence of the TT genotype, which suggests a possible role for this variant in disease progression.
