The College of Education for Women at Tikrit University discussed a Ph.D. thesis on the qualitative characteristics and biological indicators of pollution in the Tigris River flowing through Tikrit and assessed water quality using mathematical models by the postgraduate student, Ms. Sarab Raouf Dawood.
The dissertation evaluated the water quality of the Tigris River as it passes through Tikrit, identify potential pollution levels, and identify algae as biological indicators of water quality, as well as utilizing the results of physical, chemical, and nutrient tests within several mathematical models to scientifically and accurately assess water quality.
The dissertation confirmed high levels of total bacterial counts in the river water and identified several types of algae and the Water Pollution Index (WPI) results indicated that the water quality of the Tigris River in the area was poor for drinking purposes, and that pollutant concentrations increased along the river's course within Tikrit due to discharges from various outfalls along its course.
The dissertation recommended the importance of adopting biological evidence and mathematical models in assessing water quality and monitoring pollution levels to support environmental studies and provide a scientific basis that can be used to protect water resources and develop appropriate solutions to reduce pollution sources in the Tigris River.
